Hardy Ground Orchids: a Calanthe Orchid Show in Japan
Переглядів 4,3 тис.3 роки тому
For years I have been going to a Calanthe orchid show each April. Due to the corona virus the show was canceled last year, but as luck would have it, it was not only held this year, it was on display in my local area. These hardy ground orchids have been grown in Japan for hundreds of years, but their popularity exploded in the 1960s and 1970s, resulting in the near demise of wild populations. ...
Tree trimming and early spring flowers in the garden
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Every year I have to do serious tree trimming in the garden - right about the same time that all the early spring flowers are just coming into bloom. In this video you will see the transition from winter into spring in my Japanese garden. See me trimming my crepe myrtle and sasanqua camellia trees, as well as having a look around the garden after last winter’s wrath. You’ll also see many early ...
Winter Weather in the Garden - Cold Protection for Plants Outdoors
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
Winter weather lasts for only a few weeks in my garden, but I still need to use cold protection for some of my outdoor plants. Since I grow some subtropical plants such as tree ferns, orchids, and staghorn ferns in the open garden I have to protect them from cold spells we get here in southern Japan from time to time. In this video you’ll see me wrapping tree ferns in plastic tents which have w...
Fall Gardening in my Japanese Garden, Preparing for Winter
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
Fall gardening in my Japanese garden is a time for preparing tropical plants such as the slipper orchids (Paphiopedilum) and cycad collection for the coming winter months. This involves preparing an indoor greenhouse to accommodate them all, and getting the plants themselves spruced up for the long winter rest. Meanwhile the outdoor garden needs cleaning, mostly of falling leaves. The fall flow...

Wind Orchid Show at Botany Boy’s House

July is the primary flowering season for the wind orchid, Vanda (AKA Neofinetia) falcata. In this video I hold an fuukiran orchid show at my house here in southern Japan. I usually visit shows held by local enthusiasts, but given the problem with the corona virus, all public shows have been canceled. I show you a variety of fuukiran types and talk about the various aspects that makes each type ...
Yuri - Japanese Lilies in nature ユリの花

Every summer Japan is graced with colorful lily flowers, known as Yuri in the Japanese language. There are around a dozen species found here in nature, as well as a number of naturally occurring varieties. Some are well known, such as the tiger lily, Lilium lancifolium and the Easter lily, Lilium longifolium, while others are more obscure, such as the demure Lilium callosum. In this video you w...
Summer Gardening in the Monsoon Season, more repotting orchids and summer flowers
Переглядів 2,2 тис.4 роки тому
Summer gardening can be a challenge, especially in warm, rainy weather. Each June the monsoon season starts in southern Japan and continues on for the next 5 - 7 weeks. It rains about 70% of the time, usually not too hard, but sometimes rains can be torrential. In this video watch as I tackle yet more repotting, clean up my Neofinetia falcata collection for the flowering season and tackle getti...
Japanese Wind Orchids, and Friends, in the Wilds of Japan

With over 200 species of orchid native to the Japanese archipelago, this is a land brimming with possibilities of seeing them in the wild. Indeed, within a mere 30 minute walk from my front door I have seen no less than 16 different species growing, including the famous Japanese wind orchid, Neofinetia falcata. If you travel an hour away by foot, there are another half dozen more to be seen. So...

In this video I climb a local mountain in search of four "ghost orchids" of Japan - plants that lack significant amounts of chlorophyll and rely on soil fungi for their carbohydrate nutrition. In the process I also wander into forests that have gone through cycles of change that to this point they have been able to endure. The situation today is different though, and some of these changes may b...

And as I climb I talk about the importance of plants throughout my lifetime, and how I came to start up Botany Boy. I also reveal why I chose that name. Come along to get a view into m...

    So nice to see them thriving! I always assumed they went extinct in the wild in Japan because of urbanization. Not all Chinese species all fragrant, only from specific southern regions.

      @botanyboy1 5 місяців тому

      I am sad to report these plants are all but gone from this location now. The problem is not urbanization, but the over population of deer. Many say that C. goeringii from Japan are not fragrant, but that has not been my experience. Hopefully this species will be able to rebound in the future. Locally these are dark days for most orchid species in my area.

      @@sunshine467sun Not locally, or at least I've not seen or heard any evidence of it. In some parts of Japan populations are being culled. Maybe they will be here too at some point.

    It is okay for the tips to turn tan.brown, striped on the tips. Mine is a "Tiger Stripe" sago.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1 6 місяців тому

      Yes, the yellow tips eventually turn brown. This is completely normal since the yellowing of the tips is due to weak tissue that goes through a slow "death process", thus giving the yellow color. Lots of folks hate this look, but in my opinion if they are grown well, they can be very lovely. I simply cut the previous year's fronds off once the new flush comes. The weak tissue is a genetic condition in this form, not because of poor culture.

    I am guessing that these peonies were grown in a controlled environment to get them to bloom during this time of year. They are probably in pots, and are put into holes in the ground, pot and all when they are ready to bloom. I cannot see them having leaves like that in January.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1 Рік тому

      Definitely. There are cold flowering forms ("Kanbotan"), but these are greenhouse grown plants that remarkably withstand the fairly cold winter temperatures of southern Japan just long enough to put on a lovely display. Sometimes they even endure light snowfalls, hence the straw structures around them.

      Maxillaria parviflora. Unfortunately it is not quite hardy here. It sailed through the winter in this video, but next year it was nearly killed by a cold event. I managed to salvage the plant and it flowered again this year. This past winter was even worse. I lost my tree ferns. It is just a little too cold here for many things.

      @@orchidsbythelake There were only 2 days that caused the damage, 1/25 and 1/26, if memory serves. Temperatures dropped rapidly to around 25 F, possibly lower, over the first afternoon and stayed below freezing for nearly two days. Lots of damage to any tender plants, but not all remarkably. All native species were completely unaffected, including the neos, epiphytic ferns, etc. My staghorn collection also got nailed, but none outright died. One native that didn't make it was Cyathea spinulosa, but is not native to this area, and I've found it more cold sensitive than even the Australian C. cooperi.
